Growing Hemp - FAQs

Is hemp legal to grow in New Zealand?

Yes. As of May 2026, industrial hemp is legal to grow in New Zealand without a licence. You simply need to notify NZ Police and MPI before you plant — two quick emails, no approval required, no fee.

Is this certified seed?

Yes. Kompolti is a certified industrial hemp variety, bred for seed and fibre and proven in New Zealand conditions. It's the same plant we grow for our hemp foods.

What do I need to do before I plant?

Notify NZ Police (hempnotifications@police.govt.nz) with your completed form, as well as MPI (info@mpi.govt.nz) with your name, address, and a brief description of your grow. Links and full email templates are on our [How to Grow Hemp] page.

What will I actually be able to do with my harvest?

Quite a lot. You can press the seed for hemp seed oil, hull it and eat it as hemp hearts, use it as bird feed, or save it for next season. The stalks can be used for fibre — rope, garden twine, or compost. The growing guide covers the full rules.

I've never grown hemp before — is this suitable for beginners?

Yes. Hemp is a resilient, fast-growing plant that needs full sun, well-drained soil, and consistent watering. If you can grow tomatoes, you can grow hemp. We've put together a full growing guide to take you from seed to harvest — [read it here].

What's the difference between this and your Omega+ Hemp Hearts?

Hemp Hearts are our hulled, ready-to-eat hemp seed — a food product. This is certified cultivation seed, grown and tested specifically for planting.
