When Brendon and I did our recent 72-hour water fast, we wanted to demonstrate the capability and power of the human body, regenerate our immune system, and inspire our friends and whānau to take some responsibility for their own health. We are just two ordinary Kiwi lads, no different to anyone else and if we can do it, anyone can.

As you can see in our Highlight ‘Hauora’ video log on @thebrothersgreen_ Instagram, we were not only able to continue to stay alive, we thrived. I believe water fasting is not only a powerful practice for healing and rebuilding our bodies, but for our minds as well. To understand that we are all highly capable and powerful as human beings, in a world where many of us never really test the capabilities of our body and minds.
Our video log and this blog will give you a taste of our 72 hour water fasting experience, our fasting motivation and examples of where I have sourced my research and information from. I want to note that I am by no means a medical practitioner, formally educated in health, or even remotely close to being someone to take advice from. We just want people to stop and have a think about water fasting as an option to becoming a healthier human being. Do some of your own research!
Water fasting is an ancient practice used throughout history for physical and mental health and wellbeing.
“To eat when you are sick, is to feed your illness” Hippocrates, Father of western medicine.
"What I Do Have is a Passion"
For three years of my young life I have been researching and testing my body to find out what it is actually capable of, not what some overweight, out of shape human being tells me. I have been working out the most effective lifestyle practices to enhance my physical, mental and spiritual self. For the past two years I have been practicing intermittent fasting (only eating within an 8-hour window) as well as having done a three and four day fast. This fasting and other practices (breath work, meditation, cold showers and a whole foods diet) have all made significant impacts on the quality of my life, my relationships and my impact on the world around me. I wake up every day knowing that I have tools and practices to enable me to deal with life’s challenges better. I get to work full time on my life’s purpose and with people I consider close whānau. It is impossible to isolate one practice which has turned my life into the incredible experience that I am currently having, but I believe fasting has been a major contributor in my life. It has given me more energy, a healthier body, and a clearer mind with an understanding that our bodies are far more powerful than society or ourselves give them credit for.
I only ask that you are open to these ancient practices. Spend some time doing your own research and gaining your own understanding of the benefits of water fasting. This does not require belief in anything other than yourself. It does not need to be spiritual or require drastic changes in your life. It’s just you, doing something for your body.
If there was a pill that had all the benefits of water fasting it would be taken by everyone. Fortunately, it doesn’t require a pill or a pharmaceutical company to produce these results (also why we are not told about this by mainstream medical health professionals). A healthy body only ends up making and saving you money, not anyone else.
It’s just you, a powerful mindset and water.
Our Fasting Motivation
The Obesity Epidemic in New Zealand
New Zealand has the 3rd highest rate of adult obesity in the world (1 in 3 are obese - 30.9%), and the 2nd highest rate of childhood obesity in the world (1 in 9 children are obese - 11.9%). This is a f***ing joke!
This condition of chronic overeating (causing obesity) is related to the top three causes of death in New Zealand, which are all lifestyle related diseases.
Water fasting can play a role in healing our bodies by:
- Resetting our relationship with food.
- Reducing inflammation (which is the cause for all chronic diseases).
- Giving our body a chance to detox and heal itself (for example, your liver processing excess alcohol or sugar).
- Watch this space for blogs going deeper into these topics.
All three of these outcomes would take huge pressure off our already struggling health system.
We can eliminate chronic disease; we just need to take our health into our own hands. Take responsibility for yourself, your body and your mind.
There is a clear connection between our brain and gut health. What we eat can impact and influence how we feel mentally, physically and emotionally. We don’t need to highlight the issues of mental health in New Zealand. Nothing will change this quicker than introducing ourselves to some tools and methods, including water fasting.

Hi. Your link for the water fasting guide pdf isn’t working.
Hi thebrothersgreen.co admin, Thanks for the well-researched post!
I have been reading so much about water fasting, and now I’m super keen to try it out. Can you give me some tips and ideas on how to start and when to start? I have been doing intermittent fasting for half a year now, and I really enjoyed it. I also became more healthy and had much more mental clarity than ever. For tracking my time during fasting, I’ve been using an IF app called Yazio (https://www.yazio.com/en). I like to have something that I can count on to give me motivation and strength to continue. If I did this on my own, I don’t think I would last very long. Do you have any suggestions for apps regarding water fasting? That would be sweet as!

Zeb Flo and I have just come off a 3 day fast, we were all working throughout this period as well, and rather physical work might I add. We started Sunday night and finished Thursday morning. I thought I’d loose concentration and energy but as you put it it was actually the opposite. I’m not going to lie there we’re definitely difficult stages like people eating in front of me. However things like sleep, motivation and at some times energy were all actually improved. Will be definitely doing more!
